Do you know your washing symbols?

So we thought we’d give you a little heads up.

With Distinctive you will only ever have to wash at 30/40 degrees. However, you might still want to glance at labels occasionally as the spin speed could still damage your fabric.

You only want to wash cottons like towels and cleaning cloths at higher temperatures and I must admit I really like doing an occasional cleaning cloth load at 95 degrees as it cleans every residue from your cloths and also gives the machine a thorough scalding wash too. Read on to identify what those little laundry icons mean?

Washing symbols

The wash tub with the degrees inside it is very straightforward. Wash at 30 or whatever it says.

The wash tub with two lines beneath it means you are washing a wool product. As well as low temperatures, it ideally needs hand wash/wool cycle. Furthermore, it is especially important to make sure the spin speed is really low on this one. Otherwise, you will be at risk of fluffing up all those fibres and leaving bobbling on your gorgeous cashmere.

When you see hands, it means hand wash only – most modern machines have a delicate wash or wool programme setting. You can still use Distinctive, but you want to use a lot less detergent than for a normal load. And of course these fabrics don’t want a harsh spin. Jumpers will likely leave the machine fairly wet so hand wring out carefully at the end, if this is a special garment. Also, try to dry flat, or over a towel on a rail somewhere.

Drying symbols

Most drying symbols will also show the text on the fabric care label. However, in case it doesn’t show the above images are a useful guide.

You should avoid putting your clothes in the dryer when you see the square symbol with a cross through it. With Distinctive, air-drying is always best to retain the best scent. Plus, there are not many items that aren’t best dried naturally. You can’t harm a garment dried in the air. If you must tumble towels, just do so for the last 5-10 minutes.

Are also pretty easy to follow. An iron with a cross through it – Do not iron your clothes, no matter how tempting it is!

Other than that the image will be of an iron with either 1 dot in the centre of it, 2 dots or 3.

3 meaning maximum heat and the others relate to gentler heat settings on your iron.

If the garment is made of wool or silk you want the coolest setting possible. Additionally, it’s a great idea to use an old tea towel to protect gently fabric like these. An iron will burn delicate fabrics so be careful.

Well that’s it for now, we hope this helps explain the mysteries surrounding these puzzling little symbols on your clothes. If at any time you are stuck with a symbol, refer back to here and you’ll be fine. Or even better, Facebook or WhatsApp us with any laundry queries.
