‘The world’s first washing powder for men’
Whilst working for a mainstream laundry brand, our founder Louise discovered countless blog posts from men who wanted more masculine scented detergents. This led to something big!
The men had a point. All existing detergents were aimed at Mums with babies and children. So Louise set about finding the very best masculine fragrances more akin to wearing an expensive cologne.
As new brand Distinctive, Louise launched the first masculine detergent, Christmas 2012. ‘The world’s first washing powder for men.’ But we quickly realised that women, as well as men, wanted our products because of our fragrance and wash results.
Award-winning product
That first masculine fragrance was “The Opulence of Amber, balanced with the calming notes of sandalwood”. It was benchmarked the fragrance to beat for laundry in 2014 by top fragrance house Givaudan. And since has gone on to win more industry awards for fragrance in laundry detergents.
We have now launched three other fragrances, all available as a washing powder, a luxury handmade soap and a spray for fabric and home.

First of all, Distinctive was born from a need to create a laundry product that was not only gentle on fabrics, but also super kind to skin.
All our products are Eczema-friendly, Methylisothiazolinone-friendly and Psoriasis-friendly.
We still work with UK scientists today and manufacture all our products in the UK. Our formulation has now been in use for well over a decade without one single skin issue being caused by our product or fragrances. It is something we are extremely proud of. Secondly, it is so simple to use
Just add between half to one scoop of powder (remember to use less if you're in a soft water area), switch the machine on and go. You don’t need anything extra for the wash and definitely no fabric softener or stain removers.
The enzyme formula is specially designed to remove stubborn stains, even without a washing machine.
And there are environmental benefits too. You can reduce the wash temperature knowing it will deliver a brilliant wash result, despite the powder not containing chlorine, bleach, or optical brighteners.

Some More Facts About Distinctive
Your clothes will smell Distinctive when they leave the washing machine. We have a magic ingredient that acts a little like the sticky bud weed in the garden, but whilst in the wash - anchoring scent to fabric.
Air Dry
To keep as much scent as possible in the fabric as heat from the drier can cause scent to release to the air.
Our base fragrances don’t hit you from a distance - it’s all about being up close and personal when someone can smell your clothing.
Wash between 20 and 40 degrees
The optimum temperature for the protease enzyme to do its job is 30/40 °C, giving you a deep down clean. But our enzyme content has been approved for use as cool as 20 degrees.

Designer label-safe
You are not going to get a build up of optical brighteners on those expensive designer jeans, shirts or t-shirts. Our solution for a bright white load is to add a scoop of a brightening agent once in a while. Helping to make fabrics last longer and caring for them is what we do.
