Understanding Laundry Symbol Labels: A Complete Guide
What Are Laundry Symbols?
Laundry symbols, sometimes called care symbols or washing symbols, are a universal set of icons printed on clothing labels that tell you how to care for a garment safely.
Rather than using words, manufacturers use internationally recognised symbols that explain:
- Whether the item can be machine washed
- The maximum washing temperature
- Whether bleach can be used
- How the garment should be dried
- Whether it can be tumble dried
- If ironing is safe
- Whether professional dry cleaning is recommended
These symbols are designed to protect the fabric and ensure your clothing stays looking its best after every wash.
Whether you’re washing a cotton T-shirt, a wool jumper or a delicate silk blouse, taking a few seconds to check the care label can prevent costly mistakes.

Why Are Laundry Symbols Important?
Every fabric behaves differently.
Cotton can usually withstand higher temperatures, while wool, silk and delicate synthetic fabrics often require gentler treatment.
Following the care label helps to:
- Prevent shrinking.
- Reduce colour fading.
- Protect delicate fibres.
- Avoid stretching or misshaping garments.
- Keep prints and embroidery looking their best.
- Extend the lifespan of your clothing.
- Save money by reducing the need to replace damaged items.
It’s especially important to check labels before washing new clothes for the first time, as different fabrics can have very different care requirements.
How to Read Laundry Symbols Correctly
Although there are quite a few laundry symbols, they all fall into five main categories. Once you understand these groups, reading clothing labels becomes much easier.
1. Washing Symbols
The washing symbol looks like a small bucket or tub filled with water.
This tells you whether the garment can be machine washed and, if so, the maximum temperature to use.
Choosing the correct temperature helps prevent shrinking and protects delicate fibres.
Distinctive Tip
For most everyday clothing, washing at 30°C or 40°C using Distinctive Biological Washing Powder provides excellent stain removal while helping reduce energy usage. Always check the care label first, especially for delicate garments. If you remember to be in the habit of washing cool it’s far less likely you will make a severe mistake.
However rest assured – we have all experienced washing something too hot and shrinking it! And its’ sods law that it is usually something that you really liked wearing.

2. Bleaching Symbols
At Distinctive we never use chlorine bleach on clothing out of choice. It is a risky additive that harms fabric and your machine. Plus it’s a carcinogen if absorbed by the skin. Personally if you are washing with Distinctive you can ignore this as our stain busing ingredients and enzymes are good enough that you won’t ever need bleach.
The bleach symbol is shown as a triangle.
It tells you whether bleach is safe to use on that particular fabric.
Empty triangle = bleach may be used.
Triangle with lines = non-chlorine bleach only.
Crossed-out triangle = do not bleach.
Using bleach on unsuitable fabrics can weaken fibres, damage colours and permanently affect the appearance of clothing.

For example:
- A bucket with 30°C means wash at a maximum of 30 degrees.
- A bucket with 40°C means wash at 40 degrees.
- A bucket with a hand inside means hand wash only.
- A crossed-out bucket means do not wash.
Your washing machine delicates setting can be used in place of handwashing. And with Distinctive the formula works as effectively as a soak and leave product if you are cleaning things in the sink or bath! We have successfully laundered prom wear, evening attire, curtains, blinds and even lampshades and rugs in this way. Really dirty items just need soaking for several hours. It’s really rather satisfying to soak your lampshades clean after years of looking unloved.
3. Drying Symbols
If you are using Distinctive the same goes for Drying Symbols. You can ignore them as we only ever advise customers to air dry. Indoors or out doesn’t matter. It’s super safe and you won’t shrink anything and its environmental too.
Drying symbols usually appear as a square.
These explain whether an item should be tumble dried, air dried or laid flat.
Common examples include:
Square with a circle = tumble drying permitted.
Crossed-out square with circle = do not tumble dry.
Square with horizontal line = dry flat.
Square with vertical lines = drip dry.
Following these symbols helps avoid shrinking and unnecessary wear.
4. Ironing Symbols
The iron symbol indicates whether a garment can be ironed and, if so, at what temperature.
One dot indicates a cool iron.
Two dots indicate a medium temperature.
Three dots indicate a high temperature.
A crossed-out iron means ironing should be avoided.
Delicate synthetic fabrics can easily melt or become shiny if ironed at excessively high temperatures.

5. Dry Cleaning
Distinctive is a professional formula and there are some instances that dry cleaning can be safely substituted with our formula but you need to exercise a great deal of caution. 100% cotton curtains or blinds or textile lampshades for example can be safely soaked clean in a sink with Distinctive. A lot of Evening wear and ladies prom dresses etc can also easily be washed in a bath in this way saving fortunes, avoiding chemical cleaning odours etc. The shrink risk for these items is related to heat and also agitation from a washing machine – whereas soaking clean is simply wetting and squeezing out excess liquid afterwards. A circle represents professional dry cleaning.
Depending on the letters inside the circle, the garment may require specialist cleaning methods.
If the circle has a cross through it, the garment should not be dry cleaned.

COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE
Even experienced laundry enthusiasts occasionally overlook clothing care labels.
Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid.
Washing Everything at the Same Temperature
It can be tempting to throw everything into one wash, but different fabrics have different needs.
Delicate garments washed at excessively high temperatures may shrink or lose their shape.
Instead, sort washing by:-
Colour
Fabric type
Recommended wash temperature
Overloading the Washing Machine
Even when you’re using the correct wash programme, overloading the drum prevents detergent from circulating properly.
This can leave clothes looking dull and reduce stain removal performance.
For the best results, allow clothes enough room to move freely during the wash.
Using Too Much Detergent
More detergent doesn’t always mean cleaner clothes.
Using excessive washing powder can leave residue on fabrics and inside your washing machine.
Always follow the recommended dosage based on your machine size, water hardness and laundry load.
Tumble Drying Everything
Many fabrics don’t respond well to high heat.
Always check whether tumble drying is recommended before transferring clothes from the washing machine to the dryer.
Air drying is often the gentlest option for delicate garments.
Top Tips For Looking After Your Clothes
Understanding laundry symbols is only part of keeping clothes looking their best.
A few simple habits can make a noticeable difference.
With the right washing routine and by following clothing care labels, you’ll help your favourite clothes stay cleaner, fresher and looking newer for longer.
- Read the care label before washing a new garment.
- Fasten zips to prevent snagging.
- Turn printed clothing inside out.
- Separate whites, lights and darks.
- Wash towels separately from delicate clothing.
- Pre-soak stains in cool water as soon as possible.
- Remove washing promptly once the cycle finishes.
- Store clothes completely dry to prevent musty odours.
- Use the correct amount of detergent for each load.
- Clean your washing machine regularly to maintain washing performance.
The Consequences Of Ignoring Laundry Symbols
It can be tempting to throw everything into the washing machine on the same programme, especially when you’re short on time. However, ignoring the care label or not sorting your laundry properly is one of the quickest ways to damage your clothes. Pay particular attention to any woollen garments or silks! As if you throw a jumper in on a 40 degree cycle with your dark jeans and shirts, you will inevitably shrink it
Laundry symbols are there to protect fabrics and ensure garments are cleaned in the safest and most effective way. Taking a few seconds to check the label before washing can help you avoid costly mistakes and keep your clothes looking their best for longer.
Shrinking Clothes
Once a garment has properly shrunk, and the fibres damaged it’s impossible to restore it to its original size. If you only have very slight shrinkage then easing the fibres and gently stretching can sometime work. We would make a fortune if we could find a way to reverse heat damage.

Fading Colours
Bright colours and dark fabrics can lose their vibrancy if washed at the wrong temperature or with unsuitable products.
Following the recommended washing instructions and separating colours from whites helps preserve the appearance of your clothing.
Poor Stain Removal
Ignoring the recommended washing temperature can also affect cleaning performance.
Some stains require warmer washes, while others respond better to cooler temperatures combined with a quality biological detergent. Using Distinctive Biological Washing Powder alongside the correct wash programme helps tackle everyday stains while protecting your clothes according to the care label.
Even not washing a print inside out over time will shorten the lifespan of your garment and make it tattier than it would have been.
If you’re ever unsure, there are several reliable sources of information.
Check the Garment Manufacturer’s Website
Many clothing brands provide detailed care advice on their websites, including guidance for specialist fabrics such as wool, silk, waterproof clothing and technical sportswear.
Refer to Your Washing Machine Manual
Modern washing machines often include programmes specifically designed for cotton, synthetics, wool, delicates, sportswear and mixed fabrics.
Understanding which programme matches the care label will help you achieve the best washing results.
Follow the Detergent Instructions
Your detergent also plays an important role.
Always follow the dosage guidance based on your washing machine, load size and local water hardness.
Distinctive Biological Washing Powder is formulated to provide excellent cleaning performance on everyday laundry while helping remove stubborn stains at lower temperatures when used according to the garment’s care instructions.
Many people find it useful to keep a printable laundry symbol chart in their utility room or save one on their phone for quick reference.
After a few washes, you’ll quickly become familiar with the most common symbols and won’t need to check as often.
